Job Description

As a Lead UI/UX, you will be responsible for leading the UI/UX design team and ensuring the delivery of intuitive, accessible, and visually compelling user experiences for games. Your role will involve guiding design strategies, mentoring team members, managing resource allocation, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to align design objectives with project requirements and studio goals. You will work closely with the Principal UI/UX Designer, who guides technical decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and guide the UI/UX design team, advocating for user experience and interface quality across the studio.

  • Coordinate collaboration between UI/UX designers, game design, development, and production teams.

  • Establish mentorship, feedback, and professional development processes for the team.

  • Monitor team performance, satisfaction, and progress toward objectives.

  • Estimate UI/UX design effort and manage resource allocation across projects.

  • Lead recruitment, candidate evaluation, and onboarding processes for new team members.

  • Coordinate training and specialization initiatives aligned with studio needs.

  • Manage team availability, including vacations, absences, and workload distribution.

  • Promote UX research, usability testing, accessibility, and design best practices.

  • Build and maintain professional networks with UI/UX designers, game designers, and industry peers.

  • Support design pitches, documentation, and communication of UI/UX solutions to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Hold regular 1:1s, give clear feedback and build individual career plans with each team member.

  • Support the team hands-on in Unreal or Unity, building screens when needed and reviewing the team's implementation.

  • Ensure the team's UI works across platforms, covering gamepad navigation and focus, safe areas, resolution scaling, localization and platform certification requirements.

  • Own the team's UI design system (shared components, style guide and patterns).

  • Present and defend UI/UX decisions to clients.

Requirements

  • Degree in Design, Digital Game Design, or a related field.

  • 6+ years of experience in game UI/UX, including 3+ years leading a team (people management, not only project leadership).

  • Proven experience leading design teams, mentoring professionals, and managing workloads.

  • Strong expertise in UX research, UX design, graphic design, UI art, and accessibility.

  • Proficiency in usability testing, playtesting, prototyping, and design documentation.

  • Experience with design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Figma.

  • Strong communication, leadership, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and balance design quality with project constraints.

  • Experience shipping game titles, ideally on more than one platform.

  • Hands-on experience implementing UI in Unreal or Unity, and the ability to review the team's implementation and support their technical growth.

  • Ability to learn new engines, including proprietary or in-house ones.

  • Excellent written and spoken Portuguese.

  • Advanced English proficiency, with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Certifications in UI/UX design for games or related fields.

  • Knowledge of illustration, iconography, animation, and interactive prototyping tools such as Rive.

  • Experience developing design pitches and presenting solutions to clients.

  • Established professional network within the gaming and UI/UX design industries.

  • Background in co-development or multi-project studios.

  • Experience with proprietary or in-house game engines.
